It’s Our First Day on Sifnos

I’m here. For the next 83 days I’m on the Greek island of Sifnos. The quality of light is the first thing you notice when stepping onto a Greek island. Proof enough that Lord Byron was on to something when he noticed how beautifully “Eternal summer gilds them” in his poem The Isles of Greece. But with more than 200 to choose from, was it wise to choose just one? Will we find enough to do?  That’s the question I’ve often pondered in the lead-up to this trip. We’ll be here for almost three months. Is that too long? Sifnos is one small … Read more

Strawberry Hibiscus Butter – Food in Jars

Strawberry hibiscus butter. Smooth and spreadable, this low sugar preserve gets an added boost of color and brightness from the dried hibiscus blossoms. We are smack in the midst of strawberry season here in the Philadelphia region. I picked up a flat on Saturday and the boys and I (they are nearly three years old!) met some friends out in Bucks County yesterday for a round of picking. I am still trying to find my way back to the blog after a quiet winter and spring, so while I dust off my rusty recipe development skills, I thought it would … Read more

What’s The Difference Between Real Ale And Craft Beer?

Lobro78/Getty Images The craft beer scene has exploded over the past several decades, and there are now great breweries across the United States and abroad. If, at one of these breweries, you hear a patron talking about “real ale,” are they just making a pretentious distinction between craft beer and domestic beer, or does it mean something more? In fact, it’s possible they mean a completely unique style of beer. While the style of ale itself is hundreds of years old, the term “real ale” is much more recent. The term was … Read more

Gingerbread Biscotti – Leels Cooks

I’m so happy to be starting up holiday baking. Don’t tell anyone but we’ve been listening to a few Christmas playlists as well <_<. We really love spiced pastry in this house, and these Gingerbread Biscotti are perfect for the amount of tea and coffee we down on a daily basis! These dry out like regular biscotti but they’re also not rock hard impossible to eat without a tea because of the brown sugar and molasses in them. This recipe is for large sized biscotti, but if you want mini just divide the dough into two logs instead and bake … Read more

Wandering Sifnos Island – SippitySup

Sifnos Island. We’ve been here about three weeks. It’s a little before season starts, during what they call the shoulder season. It’s a time when there are fewer crowds, which is wonderful. But for the first week we were hit with a cold front and the winds that come with it. Then, like an Easter miracle, things changed quickly. By the weekend of Greek Easter (a week later than North American Easter) the weather turned fair and sunny – warm enough for T‑shirts but still cool enough for hiking. And then the ferries arrived, carrying loads of holiday revelers. The island woke up … Read more

Getting Back to Blogging – Food in Jars

Hello friends! Goodness, it sure has been a long time, hasn’t it. Between the pandemic, parenting, and burnout from all those sponsored posts last year, I forgot how to show up here. But after a little break, and the blessed addition of a regular babysitter, I’m finding myself itching to reclaim my identity and role as a canning blogger/writer/teacher. I knew it was time to get back to work when I started composing blog posts and recipe headnotes in my dreams. Part of my motivation in returning to this space is that I’m seeing a big uptick in people looking … Read more

What Is Champagne Actually Made Of?

Rawpixel.com/Shutterstock Celebrating a monumental win on the race track wouldn’t be the same without popping open a champagne bottle. You also couldn’t properly herald the launch of a new boat, raise a toast at a wedding party, or ring in the New Year. Champagne is undoubtedly the stuff of celebration, but what exactly is in those thick, dark glass bottles that makes it so special? Not surprisingly, the first and most prevalent ingredient in the bottle is grapes (a little more than 2.6 pounds of them per bottle). But you might be … Read more

Roasted Squash and Kale Salad – Leels Cooks

Are you into squash? I don’t eat enough of it but it’s delicious when made right. I kind of default to putting cinnamon/brown sugar/cayenne on it most of the time but there’s just something about the mix of spice and sweetness. Kale can be a tough customer, and I think a lot of people don’t realize you have to “massage” kale in order to eat it raw. It’s a strong, fibrous plant, and massaging it breaks down its cell walls somewhat making it nicer to eat and easier to digest! There are a million iterations of this salad, commonly served … Read more
